CALVINISM ATTACKED IN CUBAN BAPTIST CONVENTION

OUR LIBERTY IN CHRIST ASSAILED

I received word today that the Baptist Convention in Cuba is in the middle of an assembly, debating the expulsion of a number of Pastors and Churches because they believe the Biblical doctrines of Grace and Election. Cuba has gone through a form of awakening in its churches, and the Doctrines of Grace have been advancing in the churches, but opposition to them has been fierce and the situation seems to have hit a boiling point. Please pray that the truth will come out triumphant in the middle of this overwhelming attack from within. Please send this email to anyone you know that can help with prayers or by writing or calling the Baptist Convention in Havana.

Below is the letter I received explaining the alarming situation of our Cuban Christian brothers.

Dear brother and Pastor Humberto, I hope that our Lord and God is keeping you in His blessings, and that the peace of Christ is in you.

As you can see, at the end of the email there’s a photo of myself and another Christian brother with Juan Sanchez, Pastor and President of the Texas Baptist Convention, a Calvinist and Reformed Pastor, who was also one of the preachers during the “Faithful Preaching” conference held in Havana this past February. This conference left Havana under a great tension that came from brothers who were reluctant and opposed to our historical faith; this is why, at this very moment, when we are celebrating our annual Baptist Convention of Cuba, great conflicts have resulted where our pastors, out of necessity, are involved and in a public manner. Judging from something that happened yesterday, it seems that tomorrow will be decisive as to the final fate of the pastors that hold to the Doctrines of Grace. The following are the messages that my pastor sent me from Havana:

March 6 (Yesterday):

“Brothers, forgive us for not answering your phone calls. There has been much tension here. Know only that today I presented a defense before the assembly. Things have not turned out as we hoped but God is in control.”

March 7(Today):

“Please write to all the contacts in USA and let them know that the [Southern] Baptist Convention of Western Cuba is debating the expulsion of pastors and churches for the simple reason of having been found to believe the Doctrines of Grace. If others learn of what is going on here, it would help. Keep praying. Tomorrow we present our defense again. Tomorrow will be key. Pray that the truth of God will be defended.”

Join our prayers, dear brother, and share with those brothers and sisters that feel pain, as we do, for what is happening. Not one of the leaders that presides over the Convention, with the exception of the President, came to said meeting [in February] even when great servants of God preached the Word, and now this present segregational and intolerant reaction is a reflection of that, starting with the President of the Baptist Seminary of Havana, and ending with the Vice President of the Convention Adrian Ramos, both of whom are key figures of the animosity towards Calvinism.

This is the state of affairs of the Kingdom where we are, suffering violence from pastors and leaders who should be using their wisdom and gifts for the Kingdom’s growth in holiness, faithfulness, unity and in number.

Si has intentado una traición contra Dios

“Y dijo Finees hijo del sacerdote Eleazar a los hijos de Rubén, a los hijos de Gad y a los hijos de Manasés: Hoy hemos entendido que Jehová está entre nosotros, pues que no habéis intentado esta traición contra Jehová”.  

La palabra “intentado” se pudiera traducir “encubiertamente” o “secretamente”. Pensaron que sus hermanos habían “intentado” secretamente pecar construyendo aquel altar, pero fueron descubiertos a tiempo. No es correcto traducirla “cometido” porque ellos no habían llegado a ese extremo de llevar a cabo sus “intenciones”; se dirigían hacia allá pero no todavía. La palabra “traición” si es una traducción exacta y que algunas versiones traducen eufemísticamente “infidelidad” y así le disminuyen su horror y gravedad.  Aquí cabe un llamamiento a la comprensión de los que han tenido la fatalidad de llevar a cabo sus “intenciones” secretas de pecar. No los juzguéis. Detente ¿por qué te glorías sobre los que han caído? ¿Nunca has intentado una traición contra Jehová, tu familia o la iglesia del Señor? Tal vez has “intentado” pecar, pero Dios no te lo ha permitido, pediste un precio por Jesús (30 piezas de plata) pero nadie lo pagó, anduviste coqueteando con el pecado, pero no caíste en él...si has sido fiel es porque la gracia persevera en ti. La gente no está al tanto de los secretos pensamientos que burbujean dentro de nuestra mente, ni las libidinosas, egoístas e incrédulas “intenciones” que caminan por nuestro corazón. No digas “no soy como los demás hombres, adúlteros, egoístas, mentirosos” (Luc.18:11), porque seguro que intenciones de todo eso hemos tenido, pero secretamente, debajo de nuestras alargadas y farisaicas filacterias. Seamos honestos, la gloria de lo que somos pertenece a Dios y si nuestra mano no ha tocado lo inmundo no ha sido porque no se haya alzado sino porque el pecado ha estado lejos y no le hemos dado alcance. En He. 4:12 hablando de la espada de dos filos que es la palabra de Dios, donde se traduce “intenciones del corazón” la palabra es ἔννοια (o enneos) cuyo primer significado es “estupidez”. Es la palabra de Dios la que rompe esos planes estúpidos de traicionar a alguien. El fin de nuestra historia es como le dijo Jehová a Abimelec “te he impedido que pecaras contra mí” (Ge.20:6).

La Biblia no tiene errores sino malos exégetas

NO SOLO LEERLA SINO ESTUDIARLA

JOSUE 21:45

“No faltó (cayó) ni una palabra de las buenas promesas que Jehová había hecho; todas se cumplieron”. 

No hay inconsistencia con lo que dice en Jue.1:21-36 porque los israelitas se demoraron en la conquista por negligencia de ellos y en parte por conveniencia (Num.34:1-12; Deu.7:22). La parte de Dios toda fue hecha y por parte de ellos les faltaba. Eran ellos los que tenían que completar lo que ya Dios les había dado. Eran bendiciones que estarían esperando que extendieran la mano y la tomaran. Y esta es una forma muy bonita para ir concluyendo la historia de la conquista; una exaltación de la buena fidelidad de la Palabra de Dios, porque Dios no se merece que tengamos de él ni el más mínimo momento de vacilación. Y siempre hemos tenido muchos. Palabra dicha, compromiso hecho, promesa cumplida. Cuando el mundo se acabe los que leemos la Biblia, probaremos que ni un punto de ella ni una coma ha dejado de cumplirse. Oh Dios qué importante es para mí estar seguro de la inspiración de los autores de la Biblia. Algunas veces creemos completamente las cosas y otras por la mitad, las que continúan siendo un misterio, las que el diablo ha tomado para negar o la que los hombres han convertido en herejías. (Lectura adicional, Mt.5:18; 24:35; 2Ti. 3:15-17; 2Pe.1:19-21). Y como he dicho ya, la Biblia no tiene errores sino malos exégetas.
